Washington D.C. — In response to this week’s first public hearing of the House January 6th Committee, the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) issued the following statement from Advocacy Director for Judiciary & Democracy Doug Lindner:

“It is horrifying that extremist, right-wing Republicans in Congress, in the states, in the media, and on the campaign trail continue to perpetuate a proven lie over a year after insurrectionists violently attacked our country to overturn a free and fair election. The bipartisan January 6th Committee has already put forth a mountain of evidence exposing a continuing conspiracy to undermine our democracy and the will of the people. As we saw last night, Donald Trump knew he lost a fair election. His Attorney General told him he lost, his White House Counsel told him he lost, and even his daughter testified that she knew he lost. Trump and other MAGA Republicans planned, facilitated, and paid for the attack on January 6th. He refused to relent or send help even when House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy personally begged him to call off the attack. Trump said his own Vice President, Mike Pence, “deserved” to be hanged for refusing to illegally overturn the election. A federal judge recently wrote that ‘the illegality of the plan was obvious.’

This assault on our democracy is not stopping and it is more important than ever to combat the relentless election sabotage and voter suppression efforts intended to silence the voices of communities of color and communities with low wealth, who also bear the greatest burden from the climate crisis and environmental injustice. We look forward to the continued findings of this committee in the coming weeks, and to seeing all those responsible for this attack held accountable.”
