LCV Statement on the One Year Anniversary of January 6 Insurrection

Jan 6, 2022

Washington, D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) issued the following statement from President Gene Karpinski on the one year anniversary of the violent January 6, 2021 insurrection on the U.S. Capitol:

“Today our hearts are with those who were working on the Capitol grounds a year ago today, including members of Congress, their staff, and those who work tirelessly to protect and maintain our Capitol. As I said last year in the wake of the horrifying violent attack on the Capitol, ‘the will of the people must be respected.’ LCV’s focus on protecting our democracy has only grown in the last year. It is past time for the Senate to pass the Freedom to Vote Act, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, the Protecting Our Democracy Act, and D.C. Statehood by any procedural means necessary.

“The violent insurrection and all threats to our democracy are particularly harmful to people of color, indigenous people, young people, and those who have a disability – the same communities that bear the burden of environmental harms that threaten our air, water, and climate. On this solemn day, LCV’s commitment to ensuring racial, environmental, and electoral justice for all is stronger than ever.”

LCV also joined a coalition statement with other environmental groups marking today’s anniversary and is a lead host of today’s Candlelight Vigil for Democracy at 4:30 p.m. ET on the National Mall.
