Washington, D.C. – In anticipation of House passage of H.R. 1, the For the People Act, which would strengthen voting rights, increase transparency and fairness in our campaign finance system, and improve our ethics laws, the League of Conservation Voters issued the following statement from Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld:

“We applaud the passage of this sweeping pro-democracy legislation, and the decision by the new, pro-environment House of Representatives to make these reforms a top priority of this Congress. We believe that by working to ensure that the people’s voice, rather than outsized corporate influence, guides our elected officials, we can better address climate change and other critical issues facing our nation. For far too long restrictive voting laws and partisan gerrymandering have silenced voices of low income and communities of color who disproportionately face threats to clean air and water.

“We urge the Senate to take up this legislation and have a meaningful debate about the steps we need to take to keep our government accountable to the people. A refusal to hold a vote on these overwhelmingly popular democracy reforms would be yet another dismaying abdication by Senate Republicans of their responsibility to govern.”
