Washington—In response to the Senate passage of H.J. Res. 38, the Congressional Review Act “Resolution of Disapproval” of the Stream Protection Rule, LCV President Gene Karpinski issued the following statement:

“By voting to repeal the commonsense safeguards for drinking water and public health established by the Stream Protection Rule, the Republican-led Congress has clearly demonstrated their intent to make sure our federal government works for Big Polluters above all else. With their vote, supporters of this extreme legislation sent a clear message that communities living near coal mining operations do not have the right to know what coal companies are dumping into their waterways, including pollution that has been linked to increased rates of cancer, birth defects, and other health problems. As a number of the Senators who spoke against this radical attack noted, this is simply the first step in President Trump’s war on clean water and the environment more broadly, but LCV will fight alongside our Congressional allies every step of the way to protect our clean air, clean water, public lands, and safeguards against climate change.”
