Washington, DC – Yesterday, ahead of President Biden’s remarks on Earth Day, CEOs from the some of the nation’s top environmental, environmental justice, and public health groups urged President Biden to keep his promise to urgently act on climate by finalizing a deal to pass into law the $555 billion in climate, justice, jobs, and clean energy investments that the House of Representatives approved last November.

In their letter, CEOs from the Center for American Progress, Climate Action Campaign, Climate Power, Earthjustice, Environmental Defense Fund, League of Conservation Voters, National Hispanic Medical Association, National Wildlife Federation, Natural Resources Defense Council, NextGen America, Sierra Club, Union of Concerned Scientists, and WE ACT for Environmental Justice made clear that while the actions taken by President Biden to protect our planet and build resilient infrastructure are unprecedented, without a deal in Congress to pass climate, justice, jobs, and clean energy investments, the United States will not be able to meet the president’s goal of cutting carbon pollution in half by 2030.

“Scientists, economists and energy experts have warned us of the catastrophic costs if we fail to act immediately,” the CEOs wrote. “Climate-related tragedies are already a reality for too many American families. In just 15 months in office, you have visited communities across the country struggling to recover from deadly storms, devastating wildfires, extreme floods, and disastrous hurricanes. You understand what it is like for hard-working families on tight budgets to grapple with high gas prices. You know our need to transition to a clean energy future is more urgent than ever.”

The CEOs continued: “You can fulfill the vision for climate action that defined your historic campaign; meet the pledge you made to your voters, including young people, during your campaign; and show the world what a true climate president looks like. We are depending on you to do everything you possibly can to meet this moment and work with the Senate to pass a reconciliation package that puts the U.S. on the path to real energy independence while cutting emissions in half by 2030 and building an equitable, inclusive, and just future for all.”

This letter also comes a day before thousands of activists and advocates are bringing this message straight to the White House with a rally in Lafayette Park on Saturday and more than 100 other events around the country.
