LETTER: Oppose H.Con.Res. 119, the anti-climate solutions resolution

Jul 17, 2018

Dear Representative,

The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) works to turn environmental values into national priorities. Each year, LCV publishes the National Environmental Scorecard, which details the voting records of members of Congress on environmental legislation. The Scorecard is distributed to LCV members, concerned voters nationwide, and the media.

LCV urges you to vote NO on H.Con.Res. 119. This resolution expresses the sense of Congress that a carbon tax would be detrimental to the U.S. economy, particularly families and businesses. Unfortunately, this resolution is the latest example of the radical leadership in Congress and the polluter-backed organizations pushing this resolution denying the need to act on climate change. This resolution fails to consider the harmful impacts unchecked climate change is already having on our families, our communities and our economy. Furthermore, it seeks to prevent even the exploration of options that address the impacts, causes, and challenges of climate change. This resolution has no basis in fact and is merely an exercise in political posturing.

H.Con.Res. 119 is not an anti-carbon tax bill but is, in fact, an anti-climate action bill. Simply put, it broadly limits Congress from discussing and developing climate solutions. This resolution ignores the huge costs that our country is already experiencing due to climate change – costs that fall disproportionately on low-income communities and communities of color.  It is clear this resolution is meant to put the interests of the polluting fossil fuel companies ahead of our health, safety and clean energy future.

Rather than set limitations on climate action, Congress should be working towards advancing clean energy policies and developing climate solutions that benefit all communities.

We urge you to REJECT H.Con.Res. 119 and we will strongly consider including the vote on this resolution in the 2018 Scorecard. If you need more information, please call my office at (202) 785-8683 and ask to speak with a member of our government relations team.

Sincerely,

Gene Karpinski

President
