Re: Oppose Mike Pompeo’s Nomination to serve as Secretary of State

Apr 26, 2018

Dear Senator:

On behalf of our millions of members, the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) works to turn environmental values into national, state, and local priorities.  Each year, LCV publishes the National Environmental Scorecard, which details the voting records of members of Congress on environmental legislation.  The Scorecard is distributed to LCV members, concerned voters nationwide, and the media.

We urge you to oppose the nomination of Mike Pompeo for Secretary of State. Mr. Pompeo has a deeply disturbing record on issues of U.S. foreign policy, human rights, and environmental protection. He is simply unfit to serve as our nation’s top diplomat charged with representing America’s interests around the world.

Mr. Pompeo has deep ties to the Koch Brothers and has consistently favored polluting fossil fuel interests and voted against protecting public health, conserving imperiled species, and advancing renewable energy. In fact, his record in Congress earned Mr. Pompeo an abysmal 4% lifetime score on LCV’s Scorecard. His history of questioning climate change science, hostility to U.S. international engagement on climate change, and opposition to climate solutions is deeply concerning.  Climate change is one of the most critical threats facing our nation and world, and it must be addressed by the global community.

Mr. Pompeo’s anti-environmental record, climate science denial, preference for war over diplomacy, and hostility to human rights should be disqualifying. We urge you to oppose Mr. Pompeo’s nomination to serve as Secretary of State and will strongly consider including this vote in the 2018 Scorecard. If you need more information, please call my office at (202) 785-8683 and ask to speak with a member of our Government Relations team.

Sincerely,
Gene Karpinski

President
