RE: Support S.J. Res. 53, the resolution of disapproval of the Trump Administration’s Affordable Clean Energy rule (a.k.a. Dirty Power Scam)

Dear Senator,

The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) works to turn environmental values into national priorities. Each year, LCV publishes the National Environmental Scorecard, which details the voting records of members of Congress on environmental legislation. The Scorecard is the nationally accepted yardstick used to rate members of Congress on environmental, public health, and energy issues and is distributed to LCV members, concerned voters, and the media.

We write in support of S.J. Res. 53, the resolution of disapproval seeking to overturn the Trump Administration’s so-called Affordable Clean Energy Rule. This rule, more accurately titled the Dirty Power Scam, is part of a dangerous pattern of this administration ignoring science and favoring polluters over the public interest. This rule does nothing to fight climate change or protect communities from toxic pollution, and it lets fossil fuel-fired power plants off the hook to clean up their carbon pollution. The Dirty Power Scam would put no meaningful limits on carbon pollution, and, in fact, could lead to more pollution in many parts of the country than if there were no standard at all. It will simply extend the lives of dirty coal plants rather than accelerate the transition to cleaner energy sources like wind and solar.

LCV’s top priority is to address the climate crisis – the greatest challenge of our generation. Climate change is happening now, and it poses a disproportionate threat to low-income communities and communities of color. We must swiftly transition to a clean energy economy that works for all our communities, reduces the harmful pollution created by burning fossil fuels, and invests in strategies that help us prepare for the impacts of climate change, many of which are already underway.

LCV urges you to support S.J. Res. 53, the resolution of disapproval of the Trump Administration’s Affordable Clean Energy rule (a.k.a. Dirty Power Scam), and will strongly consider including votes on this resolution in the 2019 Scorecard. If you need more information, please call my office at (202) 785-8683 and ask to speak with a member of our government relations team.

Sincerely,

Gene Karpinski
