Washington, DC – In response to Donald Trump’s tweet announcing his plan to revoke state authority to cut carbon pollution from automobiles, a step that is part of a larger effort to roll back the Obama administration’s clean cars standard, the League of Conservation Voters released the following statement from LCV Board Chair and former EPA administrator Carol M. Browner:

“This decision reverses the progress we are making on achieving cleaner air and reducing the carbon pollution that contributes to climate change. The automakers do not support the Trump rollback of the cleaner cars standard and the chaotic announcement via tweet certainly does not provide the industry with the market certainty it needs to continue to produce cleaner, safer cars in future model years. Additionally, this decision undermines the tradition of EPA working with states to improve our environment and protect our health and is a broadside on states’ rights to protect their citizens. The legality of this decision will be challenged.”

Carol Browner served as the Director of the Office of Energy and Climate Change Policy for President Obama and was instrumental in the development of the existing clean cars standard that reduced pollution from vehicles and increased fuel economy, saving consumers money at the pump.
