5 Reasons Why Your Energy Bill is So High
Mar 18, 2026
Each year, LCV publishes the National Environmental Scorecard evaluating the voting records of members of Congress on environmental issues. It scores members of Congress (0-100%) on how often they voted in favor of people and the planet. The LCV Scorecard shows if lawmakers are fighting for us, or for Big Polluters. Here’s how it works, how to find your legislators’ 2025 scores, and how to tell them what you think of their scores.
The 2025 LCV Scorecard covers a year of unrelenting attacks on people and the planet. The votes show that the Republican-led Congress chose loyalty to the Trump administration and polluters, while ignoring people’s pleas to make life affordable in our country.
Members of Congress’ scores reflect how often they chose the pro-environmental and pro-democracy side on key votes throughout the year. But, how do we choose what votes to include?
A panel of two dozen experts on environmental, environmental justice, conservation, worker safety, and democracy issues makes recommendations to LCV. The panel uses specific criteria to determine which key votes to include. This criteria includes national importance, vote margin, range of issues covered, and racial and environmental justice implications of the bills, among other factors.
We score votes about clean air and water, energy, climate change, public lands and oceans, environmental and racial justice, public health, clean transportation, wildlife conservation, and justice and democracy, among others.
LCV Scorecard scores are a great indicator of the voting records of members of Congress on environmental issues. If your member earned a high score, it means they care about environmental issues. If they earned a low score, it means they often voted against the interests of people and the planet.
Knowing your members’ scores can help you hold them accountable on issues you care about.
To get started, go to lcv.org/scorecard and enter your zip code or member’s last name in the search box. Here, you can:
On the Scorecard, you can also:
If your member has a high score, even if they’re not quite at 100%, thank them! Let them know you are grateful for their pro-environment and pro-democracy votes and ask them to keep it up.
If your member has a low score, let them know you are disappointed in their voting record. Tell them they need to do more to protect your community, our democracy, and the environment to earn your support.
Call the United States Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121 to get contact information for your members of Congress. Then start your call with one of these scripts:
For a high scorer: I saw that [member’s name] received a [score]% on LCV’s 2025 Environmental Scorecard, and I am calling to thank them. It is great to see that [member’s name] is standing against attacks on the environment and our democracy. I hope that they will continue their leadership on these issues in the future.
For a low scorer: I am calling to express my disappointment in [member’s name]’s voting record on environmental issues. [Member’s name] earned a low score of [score]% on LCV’s 2025 Scorecard. [Member’s name]’s voting record shows that [he/she] cares more about protecting polluters than my family and community. If [member’s name] wants to earn my support, they need to do more to protect my community and the environment.
Use your social networks to publicly thank your members if they earned a high score (even if it’s not quite 100%), or name and shame them if they have a low score. Tag your members of Congress, use #LCVScorecard to join the conversation and share their scores on Bluesky, Instagram, TikTok and Facebook. Or, reply to posts on the member’s page with what you think of their score.
For a high scorer: Use social media to show them public support for fighting for our environment and democracy and invite your networks to join in!
For a low scorer: Use social media to let your networks know they are prioritizing polluters and special interests over their constituents and the planet.
As Trump and congressional Republicans attack our communities, our environment, and our democracy, LCV’s Scorecard is a great tool to stay informed and hold legislators accountable for their votes. Take 5 minutes to find your members’ scores and let them know what you think today!
