Before the August Congress Recess is Over, Join Us in Holding Members of Congress Accountable

Aug 28, 2025

It’s August and Congress recess season, so members of Congress are back home in their districts. August recess is not a “break” for members of Congress. Rather, it is an opportunity for them to spend time with their constituents and gain a better understanding of the issues impacting them. This means it’s also an important opportunity to let our members of Congress know how the federal government’s actions are impacting our communities.

And there’s a lot to talk about.

In July, extreme Republicans in Congress passed the most anti-environmental bill of all time, the so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill” (aka, the Big Ugly Bill). Just one month later, this bill is driving up already record-high energy costs nationwide, destroying jobs, and making our communities sicker and less safe from the impacts of climate change. The bill does all of this while at the same time cutting Medicaid and food access, all to pay for tax cuts for Trump’s billionaire polluter buddies.

In addition to this bill, the Trump administration is taking every opportunity to make life easier for polluters at the expense of our communities. From bans on affordable clean energy, to attempts to steal public lands, and sweetheart deals for fossil fuel corporations, this administration has made their priorities clear.

We’ll be the first to admit that right now things are dark. But we also know this fight is far from over. Now more than ever, it is important to build community, get involved, and push back against this administration’s attacks on people and the climate. Here are some ways LCV and our state affiliates are fighting back, and how you can get involved.

Taking advantage of August recess to hold members accountable

LCV and our 32 state affiliates in the Conservation Voters Movement (CVM) are planning 70+ public events in districts nationwide during August recess. These events are one way to show our elected officials how their votes, including on the Big Ugly Bill, are hurting their constituents. So far this August recess,

  • Nevada Conservation League joined Congressman Horsford and Democratic members of the House Ways and Means Committee to promote a mobile billboard in Las Vegas pushing back against Republicans’ “One Big Beautiful Bill” roadshow and raise awareness of the bill’s harmful impacts.

  • Michigan LCV hosted a Christmas in July event outside of Republican Congressman John James’ office, putting James on the naughty list for his support of the Big Ugly Bill.

Fighting to protect public lands nationwide

  • Conservation Colorado joined Representative Joe Neguse (CO-02) for a solidarity hike through Colorado’s Flatirons where they spoke about the unique threats faced by Colorado.

How you can get involved

With so much happening in local communities across the country, we invite you to join LCV and the CVM to raise your voice and fight back against the Trump administration’s extreme attacks on our environment and our health.
