Following a 48-52 vote in the U.S. Senate narrowly failing to strike language from the fiscal year 2018 budget resolution that paves the way for drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, League of Conservation Voters President Gene Karpinski released the following statement:
“Members of Congress from both parties and people across the country have stood together to protect the Arctic Refuge from drilling for more than 30 years. While polluters are a powerful force in Washington, today’s vote once again demonstrates bipartisan support for this national treasure. We applaud Senators Cantwell, Markey, Bennet and all the senators who supported their amendment. We’ll continue to stand with the Gwich’in people and fight tooth and nail at every step to ensure President Trump and Republican leaders do not get away with selling out one of our nation’s most iconic wild places.”
