Carol M. Browner Elected Chair of the Board of Directors at LCV

Mar 20, 2014

WASHINGTON, DC – League of Conservation Voters President Gene Karpinski announced today that Carol M. Browner has been elected Chair of the Board of Directors at the League of Conservation Voters. Browner, a former EPA Administrator who served as Assistant to President Obama and director of the White House Office of Energy and Climate Change Policy, succeeds former board chair Scott Nathan.

“We are excited to welcome Carol Browner as Chair of our Board of Directors. Carol has built her career around bringing businesses and policymakers together to advance a clean energy economy. She’ll be a powerful asset as we continue working with the Obama administration to combat the climate crisis in the face of unprecedented assaults on our environment and public health by some in Congress,” said Gene Karpinski, President of the League of Conservation Voters.

“I’m thrilled to Chair the LCV Board of Directors. The League of Conservation Voters works every day to hold lawmakers accountable for supporting policies that threaten our environment and endanger public health and to elect more clean energy champions. It’s important work at an absolutely vital time, and I’m looking forward to working more closely with Gene and everyone at LCV,” said Browner.

“For decades I have watched Carol develop partnerships with business, community, non-governmental, and state and local government leaders to champion commonsense protections for our air and water. I look forward to working with Carol as Chair of LCV’s board,” said retired Congressman and LCV Vice-Chair Sherwood Boehlert (R-NY).

During the Clinton Administration, Carol Browner served as the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency. Browner was also selected by President Obama to head the White House Office of Energy and Climate Change. For two years she served as the Assistant to the President for Energy and Climate Change. In 2011, Browner joined the Center for American Progress as a Distinguished Senior Fellow. She has served on the LCV Board of Directors since June 2011, and had previously served on the board from May 2007-December 2008.

Outgoing Board Chair Scott Nathan has served on the board of the League of Conservation Voters since 2004 and as its chair since 2011.  He recently took a position as Special Representative for the Office of Commercial and Business Affairs at the State Department.

“Scott chaired the LCV board during its most successful period in our organization’s history,” said Karpinski. “Under his leadership we have raised the profile of climate change and successfully held decision-makers accountable both in the halls of Congress and the ballot box like never before. We are truly grateful for his tireless efforts and congratulate him on his move to public service.”

“I’m proud to have led the LCV Board of Directors at a time of tremendous growth for the organization. Carol Browner is the right choice to build on this progress and advance strong environmental policies in Washington and across the country,” said Nathan.
