Washington, D.C. — In response to Senate’s confirmation of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court, Chispa National and Chispa Florida released the following statement:
“We join the chorus of celebrations across the country rejoicing in the Senate’s confirmation of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. Justice Jackson’s exemplary record, perspective, and commitment to justice for all will add a much-needed voice to the Court. For far too long, racist institutions, practices, and systems have kept Black Americans from serving as judges and more. We need to see more Black women appropriately seated at the top of their fields and in positions of power, and we must also expand educational and financial opportunities and pathways for more Black children to achieve this kind of success and recognition. We also applaud President Biden’s keeping his promise to nominate the first Black woman to the Supreme Court,” said Alejandra Ramírez-Zárate, Chispa National Director of Policy and Advocacy. “However, we must hold Republicans accountable for their shameful, racist, and unequal treatment of Justice Jackson during her confirmation hearings. We know they did not submit Justice Barrett and Justice Kavanaugh to the same reprehensible treatment. We call on Senate Republicans to apologize to Justice Jackson and commit to justice and equity for all, not just their conservative allies.
“Chispa Florida celebrates the confirmation of Justice Jackson, a Florida native committed to equity and fairness for all. Justice Jackson’s appointment represents a recognition of our nation’s racial diversity and offers hope that America’s highest court will be a step closer to promoting fairness, justice, and balance in a nation built by immigrants, Black communities, and people who sought to achieve the dream of a better society,” said María Revelles, Chispa Florida Director. “Her background as a public defender demonstrates that she understands the importance of a judiciary that works for all people, not just the wealthy and powerful. Justice Jackson’s appointment sets a new standard for professionalism, ethics, and diversity on the Court at a time when our democracy and justice require a vigilant eye.”
