Wisconsin’s Waterways Impacted by Climate Change, Threatening 1.6 Million Wisconsinites
NEW AD: “Lakes”
MILWAUKEE, WI — Today, Wisconsin League of Conservation Voters and coalition partners announced the launch of a new ad, “Lakes” and voiced their concerns for the harmful impacts Climate Change is having on Wisconsin’s lakes, rivers and streams at a press conference at Milwaukee’s McKinley Marina.
The national League of Conservation Voters’ latest ad highlights Senator Ron Johnson’s inaction on climate change, which has led to polluted waters and the spread of toxic algae blooms. Ad script and backup here.
“Today, we are asking Senator Ron Johnson to help protect our beloved waterways and are urging him to support the Clean Power Plan. From high capacity wells to frac sand mining, our state is already facing a water crisis,” said Jonah Hermann, communications director of Wisconsin League of Conservation Voters. “The Clean Power Plan is a common sense solution that takes a step in the right direction to help solve this urgent problem.”
“As Wisconsinites, we have a deep connection with our beautiful lakes, rivers, and streams. Carbon pollution threatens these waterways by raising both air and water temperatures, creating conditions that make it easier for toxic algae blooms to grow and increasing the likelihood that beaches are unsafe for swimming, including right here in Milwaukee,” continued Hermann. “Climate change can also cause a spike in extreme weather. Large amounts of rain lead to urban and farm runoff, which further pollutes our waters.”
If implemented, the EPA’s Clean Power Plan would combat this problem by reducing carbon emissions by 32% over the next 15 years.
League of Conservation Voters and EDF Action have been running a 1.6 million dollar ad campaign during the month of September aimed at Johnson’s inaction on climate. “Lakes” is the last of three ads that have aired in the Milwaukee, Madison, and Green Bay markets.
