GiveGreen Reaches $4 Million Milestone for Climate Champions

Sep 8, 2014

September 17th will be a GreenStorm

WASHINGTON, DC – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund announced today that more than $4 million has already been raised or contributed for Federal and State candidates through the GiveGreen program this election cycle. This is the most money ever collected through GiveGreen during a single election cycle and is double the amount raised in the 2012 cycle.

LCV Action Fund, working with NRDC Action Fund as well as a host of other organizations and lawmakers, is also announcing a “GreenStorm” on September 17th. This one-day online fundraising event will bring the environmental community together to raise donations for Senate candidates Gary Peters, Bruce Braley, Jeanne Shaheen, and Mark Udall through the newly revamped GiveGreen.com.

“On September 17th we’re meeting extreme weather with a storm of our own. GreenStorm will focus the environmental community on supporting candidates with a proven record of taking on climate change deniers and securing a clean energy future,” said LCV Action Fund President Gene Karpinski.

Earlier this year, LCV Action Fund announced the expansion of the existing GiveGreen program and a goal of raising $5 million this cycle with support from NRDC Action Fund PAC as part of a broader strategic alliance between LCV and NRDC Action Fund.

“This record-breaking support shows the value our supporters put on environmental champions,” said Frances Beinecke, President of NRDC Action Fund PAC. “With big money forces like the Koch brothers backing anti-environmental candidates, our champions need all the help they can get.”

During the 2010 election cycle, the GiveGreen program raised or contributed $1.3 million for environmental candidates. In the 2012 cycle, GiveGreen doubled that number with over $2 million raised or contributed to environmental champions by Election Day. This cycle GiveGreen had already surpassed the total 2012 figure before Memorial Day.

More information on individual candidates can be accessed online at givegreen.com, which is the only website devoted exclusively to raising money for environmental champions and candidates.

The GiveGreen total includes all contributions raised or contributed by LCV Action Fund in 2013-2014 for federal candidates, as well as contributions raised or contributed by state LCV partners (i.e. Virginia, Maine and South Carolina) through their GiveGreen nonfederal programs.
