Washington D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect pro-environment candidates, announced its endorsement of Josh Riley for election to the U.S. House of Representatives from New York’s 19th Congressional District.
“Josh Riley is committed to protecting New York’s natural environment and transitioning to a clean energy future with the urgency that the climate crisis requires,” said LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld. “Riley has spent his career fighting for consumers, for campaign finance reform and voting rights, and he is exactly the kind of leader we need in Congress to hold Big Oil accountable. LCV Action Fund is all-in to support Riley’s campaign because we know that he will always work to protect our environment and democracy.”
“I am honored to have LCV Action Fund’s support in this campaign,” said Josh Riley. “From the Finger Lakes to the Catskills to the Hudson Valley, our environment is a treasure, and we must do everything possible to protect it. I look forward to working with LCV to make environmental conservation a top priority in Congress.”
A fifth-general Upstate New Yorker, Josh Riley has served as a fellow for the Labor & Pensions Committee under U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA) and as a Policy Analyst at the U.S. Department of Labor. After Hurricane Katrina, Riley went to New Orleans to volunteer in a legal aid clinic assisting workers who lost their jobs because of the storm. He later moved to South Florida to work with the American Academy of Pediatrics on a landmark civil rights lawsuit representing kids from low-income families who were having difficulty accessing the healthcare services they needed. Riley then served as a law clerk for Judge Kim Wardlaw on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in California before returning to Washington to serve as General Counsel to U.S. Senator Al Franken (D-MN) on the Judiciary Committee. After going into private legal practice, Riley filed briefs in the U.S. Supreme Court arguing for stronger campaign finance laws and better healthcare for all, and in the lower courts arguing for ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment and improved access to benefits for veterans. He supported legal challenges opposing the Trump Administration’s discriminatory immigration policies, filing U.S. Supreme Court arguments to support Dreamers and oppose the Muslim Ban.
The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, the connected federal political action committee (PAC) of the League of Conservation Voters, works to elect leaders who stand up for a clean, healthy environment and to defeat anti-environment candidates who oppose climate action. Since the 1990 election cycle, LCVAF has helped elect and re-elect 90 U.S. Senators and 450 members of the U.S. House of Representatives. Over the last several years, our efforts have also helped elevate climate change and clean energy as critical issues in key elections.
