Washington D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect pro-environment candidates, announced its endorsement of Chuy García for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives from Illinois’ 4th Congressional District.

“Representative Chuy García understands that we need to take bold action on the climate crisis now in order to prevent irreparable damage to our environment and the health of our communities,” said LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld. “He has been one of the leading voices for environmental justice and equitable policies in Congress and we are so proud to support him for re-election.”

“As the Trump administration continues to roll back environmental protections and actively put our health at risk Representative Chuy García has worked relentlessly to stand up for our air, water, and land,” said Illinois Environmental Council Executive Director Jennifer Walling.”We are proud to have him fighting for our Illinois communities in Congress.”

“From rolling back protections for clean air and water, to ceding leadership on the global stage by leaving the Paris Agreement, President Trump has repeatedly prioritized corporate giveaways to the fossil fuel industry above protecting working families,” said Rep. Chuy García. “I’m proud to be endorsed by the League of Conservation Voters Action Fund and to join LCV fighting every day to reduce our carbon footprint, promote sustainability, and end the scourge of environmental racism in Chicago and throughout the country.”

Representative Chuy García was first elected to Congress in 2018. As a long-time resident of Chicago’s Little Village neighborhood, where activists fought for years to close a coal plant that was killing 26 people and causing 1,800 asthma attacks every year, García understands and has worked to reverse damage to soil, water, and air by polluting corporations as a local elected official and now in Congress. Recently, he added a provision to the recent appropriations bill to increase funding for climate change and renewable energy research while cutting fossil fuel research and development. García is a supporter of the Green New Deal. García, who immigrated with his family from Mexico when he was ten, has served as a Chicago Alderman, an Illinois State Senator, a Cook County Commissioner, and Deputy Water Commissioner in Chicago.  Now in Congress, he has earned a perfect 100% score on LCV’s 2019 National Environmental Scorecard.

Over the last several years, our efforts have also helped elevate climate change and clean energy as critical issues in key elections.
