WASHINGTON, DC—The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect candidates who will implement sound environmental policies, announced at an event today in Detroit, Michigan its endorsement of Gary Peters for U.S. Senate. Peters works hard to protect our environment and advocates for America to become a leader in clean energy innovation and job creation.
“Gary Peters is committed to preserving our planet for generations, which is why he works so hard to protect our waterways, public lands and wildlife,” said LCV Action Fund President Gene Karpinski. “He has been a true leader fighting for a more sustainable future for Michigan and our nation by advocating for common sense solutions to help reduce our dependence on dirty fossil fuels and promote clean energy jobs.”
“Congressman Peters advocates for the protection of the Great Lakes, because he understands that Michigan’s clean water is essential to our economy and our way of life,” said Lisa Wozniak, Executive Director for Michigan League of Conservation Voters. “He stands up for the health of our communities and our invaluable natural resources, including when Detroiters were breathing black dust and oil waste piled up feet from the Detroit River. Congressman Peters has been a leader in the fight to ensure that Detroit does not become a dumping ground for petroleum coke.”
“It is hard to imagine that only a short time ago, dust and runoff from enormous piles of pet coke owned by out of state billionaires were flying into homes and businesses and emptying into the Great Lakes Watershed right near this very spot. I took those special interests on, and now, those very same out-of-state special interests are spending millions in false attacks and trying to help my opponent buy this election,” Peters said. “Michiganders cannot trust the agenda of my opponent when her biggest allies are two out-of-state billionaires who would ignore the concerns of our community, our small businesses, our families and residents when they say that pet coke is flying into their homes and emptying into the Great Lakes Watershed. Michigan’s natural resources are some of our state’s greatest treasures and assets. We cannot trust anyone who would potentially put our Great Lakes, our water, or our air at risk.”
He supports common sense policies that invest in the development of clean energy technologies and create the green jobs of the future, while working to break our addiction to dirty fossil fuels and reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. Peters also works tirelessly to fund the development of new green auto technology and green manufacturing jobs. Peters authored and passed legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives that would strengthen the Department of Energy’s ability to authorize public-private partnerships to promote research for new clean auto technologies.
The Great Lakes are an important part of Michigan’s heritage, and Peters advocates for its preservation and restoration by supporting an initiative that combats the serious threats of invasive species, non-point source pollution and contaminated sediments.
His voting record has earned Peters a 93% on LCV’s 2013 National Environmental Scorecard and a lifetime score of 89%. The non-partisan Scorecard is a nationally accepted yardstick used to rate members of Congress on environmental and clean energy issues. Based on key environmental votes in the House and Senate, it is often used by the media to quickly describe a Member’s record. For more information, visit https://scorecard.lcv.org.
