Washington D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect pro-environment candidates, announced its endorsement of Jahana Hayes for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives from Connecticut’s 5th Congressional District.

“Representative Jahana Hayes has shown tremendous leadership in the fight for environmental and climate justice during her first term in Congress,” said LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld. “We are thrilled to support her for re-election because we know she will continue to support life-saving legislation like the Clean School Buses Act and fight to protect the health and safety of the communities most impacted by the climate crisis.”

“When it comes to fighting the climate crisis, we need lawmakers who will take comprehensive action as we work to build a green economy,” said Connecticut League of Conservation Voters Executive Director Lori Brown. “Representative Jahana Hayes has made climate change a top priority during her time in Washington and we know she will continue to put the health of Connecticut families first by protecting our clean air, water and public lands.”

“Protecting our environment is one of the most pressing issues of our time,” said Representative Jahana Hayes (CT-05).  “Climate change is not only an environmental issue; it is a civil rights, economic, and public health issue. Stopping and reversing climate change by protecting public lands and waters, reducing air pollution, transitioning to green energy supplies and investing in sustainable agriculture is a top priority of mine, and I am so proud to have the support of the League of Conservation Voters Action Fund.”

Representative Jahana Hayes was first elected to Congress in 2018. She is the lead House sponsor of the Clean School Bus Act which would provide grants to help replace existing school buses with electric ones. Electrifying our school buses has been a central campaign for LCV’s Chispa program as the negative health and environmental impacts of the diesel pollution from current school buses disproportionately affect children of color. This legislation was included in the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis’s historic report. Hayes led an amendment to H.R. 2, the Moving Forward Act, which doubled overall funding for the Clean Commute for Kids Act and tripled the funds set aside for disadvantaged and underserved communities. Prior to serving in Congress, Hayes taught at John F. Kennedy High School, and in 2016 won the National Teacher of the Year Award. Representative Hayes earned an excellent 97% score in 2019 on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard.
