Mar 8, 2022

Courtnee Connon,

Washington D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect pro-environment candidates, announced today the endorsement of Kirsten Engel for election to the U.S. House of Representatives from Arizona’s 6th Congressional District.

“From her extensive environmental law experience to representing Arizonans in the state legislature, Former State Senator Kirsten Engel has dedicated her career to fighting for climate action and environmental justice, and now we can’t wait for her to do the same in Congress,” said LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld. “LCV Action Fund is proud to support Kirsten Engel’s campaign because we know she will prioritize the health and well-being of communities over polluter profits, and pass strong climate and democracy legislation that will benefit all communities.”

“Voters in this district value clean air, clean water, and healthy ecosystems — for their future, their children’s future, and for all communities,” said Former State Senator Kirsten Engel. “As a mom and an environmental attorney and law professor, I am honored to have the endorsement of the League of Conservation Voters Action Fund — an organization dedicated to advocating for critical environmental issues, voter outreach and education, and electing pro-environment candidates. I am committed to working on these important environmental policies in Congress and helping to protect our planet and our future.”

Former State Senator Kirsten Engel’s law career includes working as a law clerk for Judge Myron Bright on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, working at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and as an assistant attorney general in the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office. Specializing in environmental and administrative law, she has taught at Harvard, Tulane and teaches currently in the College of Law at the University of Arizona. She was formerly an Associate Dean and Director of the Environmental Law Program at the University of Arizona. During her legal career, she filed an amicus brief in the first U.S. Supreme Court case to recognize that greenhouse gas emissions contribute to climate change; helped force paint manufacturers to include warning labels about the hazards of exposure to dust from lead paint; and oversaw a brownfield renovation program to cleanup and restore contaminated waste sites. She has also helped train the next generation of environmental lawyers.  Former State Senator Kirsten Engel has represented Arizonans in the state legislature since 2017. Since her time in office, she has helped lead the fight against attempts to gut protections for the environment, to protect carbon-free energy rules, safeguard Arizona’s water resources, and protect voting rights. She was a leader in the Democratic Caucus on issues related to water and served on the Colorado River Drought Contingency Plan Steering Committee.
