Washington, D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect pro-environment candidates, announced today its endorsement of Peter DeFazio in Oregon’s 4th Congressional District.
“We are proud to support Chairman Peter DeFazio’s campaign for re-election because he has been an environmental champion throughout his career,” said LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld. “Chairman DeFazio has been an invaluable leader in helping to combat the climate crisis, especially in the transportation sector. He has worked tirelessly to bring attention to the impacts of climate change, the need for climate-smart infrastructure, and protecting clean water.”
“Peter DeFazio has been an ally of the environment since he was first elected county commissioner,” said Oregon League of Conservation Voters Executive Director Doug Moore. “He has helped protect many of our state’s treasured places, from the Oregon Caves National Monument to Mt. Hood to the Cascade-Siskiyous. We are excited to continue working with Congressman DeFazio to protect Oregon’s public lands and fight the climate crisis.”
“I am honored to receive the endorsement of the League of Conservation Voters Action Fund,” said Chairman Peter DeFazio. “It is a privilege to be recognized by LCV’s Action Fund as a leader in Congress who fights climate change and protects our environment. Throughout my career, I’ve fought off efforts to gut critical environmental laws that protect the air we breathe and the water we drink. I’m proud to be an original cosponsor of the Green New Deal, and in 2019, three of my bills were included in a comprehensive public lands package that has protected 30,000 acres of Oregon old growth forest, 250 miles of Oregon wild and scenic rivers, and 100,000 acres of critical salmon and steelhead habitat. As Chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, I’ve authored a 21st century infrastructure plan to transition our country to a fossil fuel-free future with a green jobs economy. I look forward to continuing to work with the League of Conservation Voters to urgently address climate change and ensure that we provide future generations with a healthy, sustainable planet to thrive and enjoy.”
Elected to serve as Ranking Member on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee in 2014, DeFazio has used this powerful post to stand up to attacks on the EPA’s landmark Clean Water Rule and to call for the reduction of oil consumption in the transportation sector. In 2019, he became the Chair of the Committee and as chairman he has taken action to reduce emissions from the transportation sector. He was an original cosponsor of the Green New Deal and has also called for a significant increase in funding for transportation infrastructure, including mass transit, passenger rail, as well as bike and pedestrian infrastructure.
Throughout his tenure in the House of Representatives, Congressman DeFazio has been a leading voice calling for the protection of the environment and the need to combat the climate crisis. He has also been a strong supporter of Oregon’s public lands, including the Oregon Caves National Monument, Steens Mountain, Mt. Hood, the Cascade-Siskiyous, the Elk River and Copper Salmon area, the Oregon Badlands, Soda Mountain, and Spring Basin. Chairman DeFazio has earned an impressive 92% lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard.
About LCV Action Fund
The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, the connected federal political action committee (PAC) of the League of Conservation Voters, works to elect leaders who stand up for a clean, healthy environment and to defeat anti-environment candidates who oppose climate action. Since the 1990 election cycle, LCVAF has helped elect and re-elect 90 U.S. Senators and 450 members of the U.S. House of Representatives. Over the last several years, our efforts have also helped elevate climate change and clean energy as critical issues in key elections.
