LCV Action Fund Endorses Ruben Kihuen For Congress

Mar 10, 2016

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect candidates who will implement sound environmental policies, announced today its endorsement of State Senator Ruben Kihuen for Congress (NV-4). Kihuen has a strong track record of leadership on environmental issues, including support for advancing the clean energy economy and preserving our most special treasured lands.

“State Senator Ruben Kihuen is the proven environmental ally we need representing Nevada’s 4th District,” said LCV Action Fund President Gene Karpinski.  “In Congress, we can count on Kihuen to fight for policies that will accelerate clean energy development and protect our planet for generations to come.”

“At the state legislature and throughout the community, State Senator Ruben Kihuen works to expand Nevada’s clean energy economy,” said Robert Buntjer, Board Chairman of the Nevada Conservation League. “He also understands the importance of conserving our public lands for all to enjoy, which is why he has been a vocal supporter of strengthening protections for places like Gold Butte.”

“I am honored by the League of Conservation Voters Action Fund’s endorsement,” said State Senator Ruben Kihuen. “Nevada deserves leaders who will protect our public lands and work to combat climate change. I am ready to go to Congress to fight for what’s best for Nevadans and to take on these fights.”

Kihuen’s record in the Nevada legislature earned him a 94 percent lifetime score on the Nevada Conservation League’s Scorecard.  In the state legislature, he supported legislation that strengthened the state’s Renewable Portfolio Standard for clean energy development and that put Nevada on a path to phase out coal fired power plants. He also worked on legislation to increase clean energy loan programs for businesses and expand energy efficiency and storage technologies, and he hosted a bilingual town hall to ensure that all Nevadans are a part of the clean energy discussion. Kihuen is also a staunch advocate for conservation who consistently speaks up for responsible management of our public lands.  He has advocated for the preservation of important natural places like Tule Springs, Basin and Range, and Gold Butte, and he was one of only a few state senators to speak against an extreme proposal to seize all federally managed lands.

In contrast, Congressman Cresent Hardy has earned a 0 percent score on LCV’s 2015 National Environmental Scorecard. The non-partisan Scorecard is a nationally accepted yardstick used to rate members of Congress on environmental and clean energy issues. Based on key environmental votes in the House and Senate, it is often used by the media to quickly describe a Member’s record. For more information, visit https://scorecard.lcv.org.

Kihuen is featured on LCV Action Fund’s GiveGreen website, the only bundling website devoted exclusively to raising money for environmental champions for federal office.
