LCV announces $2 Million Campaign on Biden’s LNG Export Pause

Jan 31, 2024

Washington, DC: In response to the Biden-Harris administration’s latest major climate action putting a pause on pending LNG export projects in order to review their climate and community impacts, the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) today announced a $2 million campaign including an initial DC television buy, activity on the ground, and a significant digital campaign focused on getting the word out to young people to follow.

Watch: Big Time

“Last week President Biden said ‘We will heed the calls of young people and frontline communities who are using their voices to demand action from those with the power to act.’ and we’re working hard to make sure those folks know that their voices were heard,” said Pete Maysmith, SVP of Campaigns at League of Conservation Voters. “Big Oil and their allies are already saying anything and everything under the sun to try to scare people, all with the goal of continuing to rake in record profits regardless of the cost to consumers, these communities, and future generations. We’re committed to making sure that young people know aboutPresident Biden’s latest action, and that he has done more than any president in history to fight the climate crisis and stand up to Big Oil.”

The campaign launches with a DC cable buy (script below) thanking President Biden for this latest decision in an unprecedented string of action to tackle the climate crisis. Digital ads focused on the young people who have been pushing for this kind of bold action will follow in the coming weeks.

The Biden-Harris administration has sent a clear signal that they are taking the global commitment to transition away from fossil fuels seriously. No president has done more on climate action, from the historic investments in the Inflation Reduction Act to this announcement. President Biden is following through on his commitment to slash climate pollution, speed cheap, renewable energy, and transition away from fossil fuels.

Expanding liquified methane gas exports would make it nearly impossible for the U.S. to achieve our climate goals. Moreover, expanding LNG exports to other countries puts U.S. consumers in greater competition, resulting in higher energy prices for everyone. European leaders are saying they don’t want Big Oil to use them as an “excuse” for more exports as demand for LNG in Europe is declining. Methane gas facilities are dirty and they concentrate pollution in communities that are already overburdened by toxic fossil fuel pollution.
