WASHINGTON, DC – League of Conservation Voters President Gene Karpinski announced today that Daniel J. Weiss is the new Senior Vice President of Campaigns at the League of Conservation Voters. Weiss, who has three decades of experience in the environmental movement, will develop and implement LCV’s overall strategy on political and public education programs, and oversee one of the largest electoral programs in the country.
“Dan has the skills, creativity and experience to help us support environmental champions and take on climate change deniers,” said Gene Karpinski, President of the League of Conservation Voters. “We’re excited to have him join our team at a time of unprecedented growth and success for our organization.”
“I’m thrilled to join the LCV team at such a crucial time. It’s essential that Americans hold elected officials at all levels of government accountable for threatening our climate and the environment, and elect allies to Congress that will put public health before polluter profits,” said Weiss.
Before joining LCV, Weiss was a Senior Fellow and the Director of Climate Strategy at Center for American Progress, leading the Center’s clean energy and climate advocacy efforts. Prior to that, he worked with environmental advocacy organizations and political campaigns, including Sierra Club, where he spent eight years as political director. Weiss designed and managed the Sierra Club’s political program, endorsements, and $9 million Environmental Voter Education Campaign in 2000. Weiss was also chief strategist and lobbyist for legislative campaigns on the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Food Security Act.
LCV works to turn environmental values into state, local and national priorities; advocate for sound environmental policies and elect pro-environment candidates. LCV and affiliated political committees spent nearly $14 million last cycle—more than the previous three cycles combined—to defend clean energy and climate champions like President Obama and Senate and House candidates nationwide. LCV is on track to break those records in 2014 and spend more on campaigns than ever before.
