LCV Dubs This Week ‘Polluter-Palooza’ on the Hill

Dec 1, 2015

WASHINGTON, DC – This week, the House of Representatives is expected to vote on the Congressional Review Act resolutions of disapproval for the Clean Power Plan, S. J. Res 23 & 24, and is also expected to move an energy bill that weakens environmental protections and doubles-down on fossil fuels, H.R. 8. At the same time, President Obama and world leaders have convened in Paris to work towards a historic climate agreement. LCV President Gene Karpinski issued the following statement:

“This week climate-denying members of Congress are launching a veritable “polluter-palooza” of reckless legislation to please their big polluter allies. The parade of dirty bills includes radical legislation that would permanently block the Clean Power Plan, denying the American people the public health and economic benefits it provides, as well as an energy bill that undermines environmental protections, increases pollution, and favors fossil fuels while failing to make necessary investments in clean energy technology. Fortunately, the president has taken a strong stance against these attacks, making it clear they will ultimately fail. In stark contrast with the climate change denier shenanigans in Congress, the international climate conference is convening in Paris this week, where more than 180 countries have already made climate commitments. As momentum builds for a historic global climate agreement Congress should stop wasting time and abandon these senseless efforts to block climate action.”
