WASHINGTON, DC – League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld released this statement on the ruling by the Nebraska Supreme Court today on Keystone XL’s proposed route through the state. Although a majority of the judges believe that the law was unconstitutional, a supermajority of five judges did not, so the lower court ruling was vacated and the route stands.
“This ruling has no impact on the fact that the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline fails President Obama’s climate test, threatens our water, and is a bad deal for the American people. It’s unfortunate that Congressional Republicans are wasting time with continued attempts to go around the President despite his pledge to veto this harmful bill. Fortunately, the President continues to build on his strong climate leadership, including through the Clean Power Plan, the recent agreement with China, and the $3 billion commitment to the Green Climate Fund. We remain more confident than ever that he will reject this dirty and dangerous pipeline once and for all, and with today’s Nebraska decision behind us, we urge him to do so as quickly as possible.”
