LCV Statement Ahead of All-Night Climate Speeches in the Senate Tonight

Mar 10, 2014

WASHINGTON, DC –League of Conservation Voters President Gene Karpinski released this statement on the importance of the all-night floor speeches happening in the Senate later tonight pressing for action on climate change:

“This is a historic day and night. We’re thrilled that so many Senators, led by Senators Schatz, Whitehouse, and Boxer, are pulling an all-nighter on the floor of the Senate to talk about the urgent need to confront the climate crisis.

As Majority Leader Reid said recently, ‘Climate change is the worst problem facing the world today.’ These senators are standing up to well-funded dirty energy industries and their allies and giving voice to the growing demand in this country to address one of the defining issues of our time. They know that cutting carbon pollution is both good policy and good politics. Poll after poll shows public support for action.

For too long climate change deniers have gotten away with spreading misinformation and blocking steps to combat climate change and build a more sustainable energy future. From the work of the House Sustainable Energy & Environment Coalition and the Safe Climate Caucus to this effort by the Senate Climate Action Task Force, it’s a delight to see more and more members of Congress lead the way by speaking out on this crucial issue.”
