Following the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee’s vote today to approve the misnamed HELP for Wildlife Act (S. 1514), League of Conservation Voters Legislative Associate Arian Rubio released the following statement:
“Whether a species is listed for protection under the Endangered Species Act should be determined by science, not politics. We strongly oppose language in this bill that threatens the future of wolves in the Great Lakes and Wyoming. In addition, we oppose a provision that would prohibit the EPA from regulating lead in fishing tackle, allowing more of this toxic substance into our environment to poison our wildlife and threaten our children’s health. Even though this legislation reauthorizes many important conservation programs, we urge senators to oppose this bill as long as this egregious attack on the Endangered Species Act and other damaging anti-environmental provisions remain.”
