Washington, DC – In response to President Obama’s remarks in New Orleans to mark the ten year commemoration of the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina, LCV President Gene Karpinski issued the following statement:

“Ten years ago this week, the Gulf region was torn apart by Hurricane Katrina, which did such unprecedented damage that the recovery process is still underway. It is a tragedy that these communities had to pay a bitter price in lives, in homes, and ways of life, for this disaster. We commend President Obama for recognizing that we must take steps to make our cities and towns more resilient in the face of extreme weather fueled by climate change. Resiliency is an important piece of the plan to meet the climate crisis head-on. The Clean Power Plan is another important component – by setting the first ever federal limits on the amount of carbon pollution power plants can dump into our air, we can make critical progress in combatting climate change.”
