LCV Statement on the Reintroduction of the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act

Sep 19, 2023

Washington, D.C.— In response to the reintroduction of the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act in the House, the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) issued the following statement from Democracy Program Director Justin Kwasa:

“This National Voter Registration Day, we applaud Representative Terri Sewell and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and their cosponsors for reintroducing the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. It is a vital response to a decade of U.S. Supreme Court attacks on the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and one that restores and modernizes the landmark protections that John Lewis, Martin Luther King, Jr., and so many other civil rights leaders bravely fought for. This critical bill offers protections for groups historically excluded from the democratic process and includes provisions to combat modern voter suppression tactics.

“We urge Congress to swiftly pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and other crucial voting rights legislation, including the Freedom to Vote Act and D.C. Statehood, in order to ensure the voices of all voters are counted in the upcoming election and beyond.”
