WASHINGTON D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) President Gene Karpinski and Texas League of Conservation Voters (TLCV) Executive Director Elizabeth Doyel issued the following statements in anticipation of Saturday’s public meeting in El Paso on the Castner Range National Monument proposal:

“We’re thrilled the El Paso community will have the opportunity to share their vision to permanently protect the Castner Range as a national monument with the Obama administration. Working to safeguard and expand outdoor access for the surrounding urban community will protect the areas’ countless cultural and historic resources for future generations, while providing an area for everyone to enjoy the great outdoors. We applaud Congressman O’Rourke for his tireless effort to protect this special place for the community and hope the president acts to create a Castner Range National Monument,” said LCV’s Gene Karpinski.

“We can’t wait to show the administration the strong local support for a Castner Range National Monument in the El Paso area at tomorrow’s public meeting. For decades, a diverse group of local stakeholders have been working tirelessly to expand access to this urban escape. Congressman O’Rourke has been a relentless advocate for our community and we can’t wait to join him to show the administration just how passionate El Pasoans and all Texans are about a new national monument,” said TLCV’s Elizabeth Doyel.

The Castner Range in Texas is home to a diverse desert ecosystem and is a culturally and historically significant place for many communities. This public meeting to be held at the EPCC Transmountain Campus Forum Theater will offer discussion on the future of the range.
