[LETTER] Oppose Anna St. John for Fifth Circuit

Ahead of the Committee vote on the nomination of Anna St. John to the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) urged Senators to oppose the nomination. LCV will strongly consider including these votes in our 2026 National Environmental Scorecard.

Re: Oppose Anna St. John for Fifth Circuit

Dear Senator,

The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) believes that everyone has a right to clean air, clean water, public lands, and a safe climate protected by a just and equitable democracy. Achieving this requires highly qualified, ethical public officials committed to protecting the people’s freedoms, respecting the rule of law, and ensuring equal justice for all. Each year, LCV publishes the National Environmental Scorecard, detailing the voting records of members of Congress. The Scorecard is distributed to LCV members, concerned voters nationwide, and the media.

We urge you to vote NO on the nomination of Anna St. John to the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. St. John has spent her career protecting corporations over the rights of ordinary Americans and working for organizations that take money from corporations trying to influence the judiciary. Her demonstrated corporate bias is disqualifying, and her elevation is a threat to Americans’ rights to breathe clean air, drink clean water, and equal justice under law.

Before her lifetime appointment to the bench in March 2026, St. John led the Center for Class Action Fairness (CCAF), a project first of the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI) and later the Hamilton Lincoln Law Institute. CCAF intervenes in class action lawsuits to help corporations avoid paying damages for misleading and harming consumers. CEI has taken millions from the Big Oil Koch family’s foundations, Monsanto, and the Exxon-Mobil Corporation, and has submitted amicus briefs in cases before federal courts that undermine environmental protections, including West Virginia v. EPA, a landmark decision that twisted the law to dramatically curtail common-sense climate action under the Clean Air Act. If elevated to the Fifth Circuit, she will continue to harm ordinary Americans in service of corporate greed and erode public trust in the judiciary.

For all these reasons, LCV strongly urges you to vote NO on the nomination of Anna St. John to the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.
