LETTER: Oppose Todd Blanche for Attorney General

Yesterday afternoon the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) sent the following letter from LCV President Pete Maysmith to the United States Senate, urging them to vote NO on the nomination of Todd Blanche to be United States Attorney General. LCV will strongly consider including these votes in our 2026 National Environmental Scorecard.

Re: Oppose Todd Blanche for Attorney General

Dear Senator,

The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) believes that the climate, our democracy, and environmental justice require highly qualified, ethical public officials committed to protecting the people’s freedoms, respecting the rule of law, and ensuring equal justice for all. Each year, LCV publishes the National Environmental Scorecard, detailing the voting records of members of Congress.

We urge you to vote NO on the nomination of Todd Blanche to be United States Attorney General. Blanche’s record as Deputy Attorney General and Acting Attorney General reflects a dangerous and disqualifying pattern of serving Donald Trump’s personal interests instead of equal justice under law.

In his current role, Blanche has openly acknowledged that he welcomes Trump’s meddling in prosecutorial decisions, upending half a century of DOJ independence critical to the rule of law. He has been protecting Trump’s friends and supporters, dismissing prosecutions of January 6th insurrectionists and attempting to give the president and his fellow insurrections 1.8 billion in American taxpayer dollars.  He is ultimately responsible, first as Deputy Attorney General and later as Acting Attorney General, for the firing of January 6 prosecutors and political prosecutions of Trump’s perceived enemies. 

During Blanche’s tenure with the department, thousands of career public servants have been purged from the DOJ, devastating federal civil rights, voting rights, and the environmental law enforcement, as well as internal compliance with federal ethics law.  He has misused DOJ funds to pay polluters to cancel clean energy projects and reinvest in fossil fuels. Moreover, his alarming evasiveness in response to questions at his confirmation hearing about illegal voter intimidation by federal agents at polling places this fall not only threatens the integrity of free and fair elections, but also shows that, if confirmed, he will continue to advance the president’s agenda at the expense of the American people.

For all these reasons, LCV strongly urges you to vote NO on the nomination of Todd Blanche to be United States Attorney General.
