Washington, DC – Today, Unrig Our Economy and the League of Conservation Voters released a new ad about rising energy bills as a result of the Republican Tax Law, also known as the “Big Ugly Bill,” which Congressman Tom Kean, Jr. (NJ-07) voted for. The ad features Michele, a High Bridge, NJ resident whose energy costs have skyrocketed. The ad highlights how Michele and her husband worked hard and saved for retirement, but are struggling to keep up with higher costs. Now, the Republican Tax Law is raising energy bills even higher while taking clean energy off the grid and giving massive tax breaks to large corporations, including utility companies.
The ad comes following a 13 percent increase in energy bills nationwide in 2025 and are currently on the rise. Last year’s Republican Tax Law backed giveaways for billionaire oil and gas executives, while gutting tax credits for clean energy projects that would have lowered energy bills and provided hundreds of thousands of family-sustaining jobs to Americans. The bill’s cuts to clean energy are projected to raise New Jersey household’s energy bills by $180 annually.
“Energy bills are skyrocketing and people across the country, like Michele, are struggling to keep up,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “Congressman Tom Kean Jr. voted for the Republican Tax Law that will make energy costs go up even higher. Working families want relief. They can’t afford higher costs.”
“By voting to pass the Republican Tax Law, Congressman Tom Kean, Jr. voted to raise energy prices for hardworking families, block clean energy sources, and prioritize polluters over people,” said Sara Chieffo, Senior Vice President of Government Affairs at the League of Conservation Voters. “Now more than ever, we need clean energy – the most affordable and fastest to deploy energy source– to keep up with increasing demand. Congressman Kean broke his promise to his constituents to lower costs and New Jersey residents deserve to know who is to blame for their skyrocketing costs.”
