Washington, DC – Today, President Obama delivered the commencement address at the Coast Guard Academy in Connecticut, and underscored that climate change is a national security risk. LCV President Gene Karpinski issued the following statement:

“Once again President Obama has demonstrated the fundamental threat climate change poses to our way of life.  The Defense Department has for years acknowledged that left unchecked, climate change will not only impact our ability to protect Americans at home, but will lead to deteriorating economic conditions abroad, fueling global instability and humanitarian crises.  Among other essential measures the administration has undertaken, the EPA’s Clean Power Plan is our best bet to rein in unlimited carbon pollution and address dangerous climate disruption.”
