About LCV

The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) is the independent political voice for the environment.  To secure the environmental future of our planet, LCV’s mission is to advocate for sound environmental policies and to elect pro-environmental candidates who will adopt and implement such policies.

  • Through our National Environmental Scorecard and Presidential Report Card we inform the public about the most important environmental legislation of the past Congressional session and show them how their own and other representatives voted.
  • We run tough and effective campaigns to defeat anti-environment candidates, and support those leaders who stand up for a clean, healthy future for America.
  • We educate the public, build coalitions, promote grassroots power, and train the next generation of environmental leaders as part of our grassroots efforts.

The LCV Family of Organizations includes LCV, LCV Action Fund, LCV Accountability Project, and LCV Education Fund.

Informing the Public about the Most Important Environmental Legislation and How their Leaders Voted on It
LCV produces the National Environmental Scorecard and Presidential Report Card, the two authoritative records of how members of Congress and the Administration handle the most important environmental issues before them. The Scorecard and Presidential Report Card provide explanations of the most important environmental bills that Congress and the President considered that session. They also inform the public how their own and other representatives voted on those bills to encourage citizens to contact their leaders and let them know they are doing a good job or that they need to give sound environmental policy greater importance during their tenure.

Campaigns
LCV's track record demonstrates our ability to use the democratic process to improve the environment. We have:

  • Defeated 23 out of 37 anti-environmental candidates targeted by our Dirty Dozen campaigns since 1996
  • Helped hundreds of environmental leaders to victory, both on Capitol Hill and at the ballot box.
  • Had over 80% of LCV endorsed candidates win since 1996.

How much impact can LCV campaigns make on national policy? In a Congress closely divided on the environment, these LCV victories can make all the difference.

How You Can Help
If you believe that America's pro-environment majority deserves a pro-environment Congress, we ask that you join the tens of thousands of LCV members who are working to make it a reality. Since LCV takes no money for its political activities from corporations, foundations, or interest groups, we must rely exclusively on individuals who understand what's at stake for our environmental future. With your help, we can prevent the accomplishments of the last three decades from being dismantled -- and build a sustainable future for America.
