No Kings Rallies Draw Record-Breaking Crowds Protesting Trump’s Assaults on Democracy

Over the weekend, a record-breaking 5 million people across the United States took to the streets to stand up to President Trump’s increasingly authoritarian administration and remind him that there are no kings in America.

Over the past five months, President Trump has shown complete disregard for the Constitution and displayed authoritarian behavior. He has defied the courts time and time again, neglected the Constitutionally mandated separation of powers, politicized the military against the public, and so much more. Under his orders, Republicans in Congress are attempting to undo years of progress on climate by banning clean energy and selling off our treasured public lands.

More than 2,000 No Kings rallies took place nationwide in large cities and small towns alike, and drew thousands of protesters even in deep red states like Idaho and Florida. LCV was proud to serve as a partner organization for the event, and LCV members and staff joined in local protests across the country.

The total turnout, which exceeded 5 million participants, likely broke the previous record for the largest single-day demonstration in the U.S., set at the 2017 Women’s March following Trump’s first inauguration. The enormous crowds at No Kings protests nationwide also presented a stark contrast to the weak turnout at Trump’s military parade and birthday celebration in Washington, D.C. the same day. The success of No Kings shows the nation’s intolerance of the Trump administration’s draconian actions, and serves as a reminder that we are not alone in this fight.

What’s next? Keeping up the momentum from No Kings Day

The No Kings protests were a powerful display of community and just how impactful we can be when we work together and organize to hold our government accountable. It has also sparked discussion of the 3.5% rule: the historical trend that major political change is achieved when around 3.5% of a country’s population participates in sustained nonviolent civil resistance. Each and every one of us needs to keep showing up and growing the movement so that we have the power to make real change.

What comes next is more than just a single protest — it’s about building a movement strong enough to protect our freedoms, defend our democracy, and outlast any one politician.
