In the October edition of Good Climate News, one thing remains clear: nationwide, affordable, reliable clean energy is winning over dirty fossil fuels. Even as the Trump administration tries to prop up Big Polluters, clean energy is lowering costs for Americans. As energy use soars, more states are speeding up clean energy projects to meet the demand.
This month in good climate news, clean energy hit new milestones around the world and across the U.S.
This year, wind and solar have produced more energy than coal worldwide. More renewable energy means more affordable energy, and less exposure to toxic fossil fuels.
New England’s last remaining coal plant retired three years ahead of schedule as cheaper, more efficient forms of energy have replaced fossil fuels in the region. The New Hampshire plant’s owner plans to redevelop the site for solar energy, adding more affordable renewable energy to the grid. (Meanwhile, the Trump administration is forcing other dirty, expensive coal plants to stay open while consumers foot the bill.)
Used electric vehicle (EV) sales increased by 40% compared to last year, as falling prices make clean vehicles an affordable option. EV prices are on track to match gas car prices by the end of this decade.
Rising demand is driving up energy costs and electric bills at record rates. The good climate news? To increase energy supply, state climate leaders are speeding up clean energy projects.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced the state will build more clean energy, faster. The investments will increase energy supply and control rising energy costs for residents. Likewise, Oregon Governor Tina Kotek is fast-tracking clean energy projects to expand capacity, control costs, and create jobs. Both states are taking advantage of the clean energy tax incentives before the Big Ugly Bill removes them.
Solar remains the cheapest and quickest way of adding energy to the grid. By getting more clean energy sources like solar online, communities can meet demand and keep costs from rising.
In California, solar power is generating more electricity than fossil fuels. Thanks to solar, Californians’ electricity costs have risen significantly less than the national average.
In Texas, solar power has broken 17 records this year. Over the summer, it reached an all-time high and provided more electricity than coal. Thanks to solar, Texans didn’t need to conserve energy on hot days, as is usually needed in summer. Texans have weathered blackouts for years. Now solar power is stabilizing the electric grid with reliable, clean energy.
