LCV and ECU Statement on Senate Democrats’ Hearing on Dark Money and Climate Action

Oct 29, 2019

Washington, D.C. – In response to the Senate Democrats’ Special Committee on the Climate Crisis’ hearing on dark money and barriers to climate action today, the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) and End Citizens United (ECU) Action Fund released the following statement:

“Kudos to Senator Whitehouse, Chairman Schatz and members of the Senate Democrats’ Special Committee on the Climate Crisis for working to take on the corporate polluter interests that continue to block climate action,” said LCV SVP of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld. “We desperately need to reform our democracy, get polluter money out of politics, and ensure that the communities most impacted by the climate crisis and toxic pollution have a seat at the table when we advance ambitious and equitable national climate policies.”

“To make real progress on climate change, we must shine a light on the corroding influence of dark money in politics,” said End Citizens United Action Fund President Tiffany Muller. “Senator Sheldon Whitehouse’s initiative to bring together top experts and anti-corruption leaders is an important step in exposing ties between corporate special interests and climate change deniers once and for all. End Citizens United Action Fund thanks Senator Whitehouse for his continued leadership on both democracy reform and the environment, and we urge the Senate to follow suit.”

The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) is a national environmental organization supported by more than two million members who believe our earth is worth fighting for because everyone has a right to clean air, water, lands, and a safe, healthy community. End Citizens United Action Fund, an arm of the campaign finance reform group, encourages ECU’s four million members to call their elected officials, host petition drives, participate in letter to the editor campaigns, and join coalitions of other grassroots advocacy groups to pass legislation to help get big money out of politics.
