Chispa Arizona- Spring 2019

May 1, 2019

Chispa Arizona is growing! In the first quarter of the year, two new members joined our team: Nicole Morales as our civic engagement director and Vianey Olivarria to provide consulting support as communications specialist. These new leaders will provide the team with the skills and knowledge needed to continue engaging with and building the political power of the Latinx community in Arizona.

Chispa Arizona launched voter registration efforts this year, registering voters in Phoenix. The Chispa Arizona Civic Engagement team is the only grassroots group registering voters in south and west Phoenix for the special Phoenix City Council elections in District 8 and District 5, heavily Latinx districts where much of Chispa Arizona’s membership base lives.

We are active at the legislature on public lands and democracy policy. Among Chispa Arizona’s priorities is HB 2271, a Public Lands Day designation for the first Saturday in April. HB 2271 unanimously passed the House in February. Chispa AZ promotorxs participated in Arizona’s Environmental Lobby Day to lobby legislators to support for our democracy, our public lands, clean air and clean energy.

Phoenix Union High School District (PUHSD) voted UNANIMOUSLY for an electric school bus pilot program! This is a historic victory for our communities and Phoenix Union students. The team thanks all school board members, PUHSD administration, the South Mountain Comite and organizers for all your hard work! #CleanRides4Kids
