Washington, D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect candidates who will support sound environmental policies, announced today its endorsement of Donna Shalala for Congress in Florida’s 27th District.
“Donna Shalala has a proven record of working to improve public health and protect the environment,” said LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld. “We are confident that her knowledge and experience will make her a leader in Congress on critical issues like addressing climate change and ensuring that Florida’s water is free of pollution and dangerous algae blooms. We are proud to endorse her campaign.”
“Climate change and sea level rise are two of the biggest planetary challenges we face, especially in South Florida, where our coastlines and natural treasures like the Everglades face environmental crises like never before,” said Donna Shalala. “I am honored to receive the endorsement of LCV Action Fund, and I look forward to working with League of Conservation Voters members across Florida to protect and defend our environment for generations to come.”
Donna Shalala served as the assistant secretary for policy development and research at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) during the Carter administration and went on to serve as U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) in the Clinton administration. She served as President of Hunter College of the City University of New York, Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and President of the University of Miami. Shalala is one of the founders of EMILY’s List and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, from President George W. Bush in 2008. In Congress she will focus on strengthening environmental policies to protect public health and addressing climate change and sea level rise.
