LCV and NYLCV Statements on South Fork Wind Offshore Wind Project

Mar 14, 2024

Washington, D.C.— In response to today’s announcement from Governor Hochul that South Fork Wind, the first commercial-scale offshore wind project in the US, will be fully online, the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) and the New York League of Conservation Voters (NYLCV) issued the following statements:

“We are thrilled that the US’s first commercial-scale offshore wind project is fully operational. The completion of South Fork Wind is a milestone that supplies New York’s Long Island communities with reliable clean energy while creating good-paying jobs and building on President Biden’s commitment to achieving our climate and emission goals,” said LCV Senior Government Affairs Advocate David Shadburn. “Offshore wind energy projects like South Fork are an essential part of the clean energy transition that the strong tax incentives of Biden’s clean energy plan are supercharging to address the climate crisis at the scale and pace science and equity require.”

“Today marks a major step in New York’s transition away from fossil fuels and toward a clean energy future with less air pollution choking our communities,” said Julie Tighe, President of the New York League of Conservation Voters. “After years of planning and countless hours of labor and construction – many of those union hours – South Fork Wind is complete and delivering clean electricity from offshore wind to New York homes and business. We congratulate Governor Hochul, Orsted and Eversource on this remarkable first-in-the-nation achievement. With the governor’s bold climate leadership, and with smart and innovative companies that are committed to developing – and capable of delivering – large-scale renewable energy projects, New York’s clean energy future is bright.”
