Washington D.C. – Today, LCV, which works to elect pro-environment candidates, announced the launch of its 2022 GreenRoots member mobilization program.
“The stakes for climate, justice, and democracy have never been higher in a midterm election year,” said LCV Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld. “Now more than ever, we need to elect leaders who will fight for all communities and stand up against corporate polluters and their profits. LCV is thrilled to launch our 2022 GreenRoots program to mobilize our members to volunteer for the climate and environmental justice champions who will ensure we have true pro-environment majorities in Congress next year. The passage of the Inflation Reduction Act–the single-largest climate investment ever–proves once again that elections have consequences and that’s why this is our biggest grassroots mobilization effort yet. LCV and our members are all in to win this November.”
“LCV members are more motivated than ever to help elect climate and environmental justice champions,” said LCV National Field Director Jennessa Agnew. “After spending the last year and a half mobilizing to help get Congress to pass the biggest investment in clean energy and environmental justice in history, there is so much energy and excitement to volunteer to help get those climate champions re-elected and elect new candidates who will lead the ongoing fight to ensure everyone in this country has clean air, clean water and clean energy.”
Now in its sixth election cycle, LCV will invest $1.75 million in the effort with 100 program staff, including Field Organizers on the ground in 15 states. To deepen LCV’s impact, we’re also launching a national membership recruitment team, which will mobilize LCV members across the country to help elect 50 LCV Action Fund-endorsed federal candidates, including 13 U.S. Senate candidates. GreenRoots is one of the largest coordinated field programs in progressive politics and has had a significant impact since it was first launched in 2012.
Since its launch, Greenroots has mobilized thousands of LCV members to knock on doors, make phone calls, wave signs, and rally in green t-shirts to help elect environmental champions. This year, GreenRoots organizers plan to make over 1 million calls and texts to mobilize LCV members, who will contact hundreds of thousands of voters through canvassing, phone banking, text banking, and letter and postcard writing.
LCV will have organizers in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin, with our members volunteering in additional states and races as well.
Even before the historic passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, climate and clean energy issues were poised to play a major role again this election cycle. Candidates across the country, from Colorado to Rhode Island to Nevada to New York to Arizona, are making climate, clean energy and the environment a central part of their argument to voters, and poll after poll has shown that voters want their elected officials to take action on climate and environmental justice.
As we continue to fight with everything we have to build a just and equitable clean energy future, we know that the still-too-powerful fossil fuel industry will also be also be working hard to elect candidates who will fight for policies put our communities at risk in order to protect record profits and take advantage of consumers. The work of LCV’s members to elect true climate and environmental justice champions has never been more important and there is clear momentum for pro-environment candidates as we enter the final months of this election cycle.
