WASHINGTON, D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) today launched an $80,000 digital ad campaign thanking President Obama for beginning the process to regulate existing sources of methane pollution from the oil and gas industry, which is a potent contributor to climate change. The ads highlight the danger to our environment and public health posed by methane pollution from the oil and gas sector and thank the President and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Gina McCarthy for their leadership in tackling the climate crisis. The campaign will run over the next two weeks nationally and in Washington, DC on several major newspaper websites, Facebook, and Google.

“President Obama has already achieved so much in the fight against climate change, and we are grateful that he has committed the EPA to take the next big step in reducing methane pollution,” said LCV President Gene Karpinski. “Methane from the oil and gas industry is a major contributor to climate change, and limiting this pollution from existing sources will protect our environment, create jobs, grow the economy and reduce toxic air pollution that endangers public health. Reducing methane pollution from existing sources can begin right now using low cost, common-sense technologies already available, and we look forward to working with Administrator McCarthy and the EPA as they immediately begin this important process.”

This past year has seen the Obama administration make huge progress in tackling the climate crisis, including finalizing the nation’s first-ever limits on carbon pollution from power plants, leading the world to a historic agreement in Paris to limit emissions, and rejecting the dirty Keystone XL pipeline. The next big step to addressing climate change is to regulate methane pollution that is leaked, vented, and flared from the oil and gas industry. On August 18, 2015, the EPA announced a draft proposal to regulate methane emissions from new and modified sources in the oil and gas sector, which the agency aims to finalize this spring. On March 10, in conjunction with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s visit, President Obama committed his administration and the Environmental Protection Agency to immediately beginning the process of regulating methane pollution from existing sources in the oil and gas industry, which will continue to be the biggest source of the problem in the future.
