WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the Supreme Court issued a temporary pause on implementation of the Clean Power Plan pending litigation in the lower courts. In response, LCV President Gene Karpinski issued the following statement:
“While we strongly disagree with this temporary pause, we are confident that the courts will ultimately uphold the Clean Power Plan on its merits. These standards have a firm legal basis in the Clean Air Act, and have been embraced by a broad and diverse set of stakeholders—including many utilities, public health experts, clean energy advocates and others. Meanwhile, states have in fact already begun developing implementation plans and engaging stakeholders on these public safety standards, which protect public health, grow the economy and create jobs. The transition away from fossil fuels towards a clean energy economy must and will continue.”
