Washington, D.C. –In anticipation of the House passing H.R. 1644, the Supporting Transparent Regulatory and Environmental Actions in Mining Act (STREAM Act), a bill to block the Department of Interior’s proposed Stream Protection Rule that aims to better protect mining communities from the harmful impacts of coal mining pollution, LCV Legislative Representative Madeleine Foote issued the following statement:
“House Republican leadership is determined to undermine any and all efforts the Administration makes to ensure that our drinking water is clean and safe. This bill is a huge giveaway to Big Polluters, allowing them to keep their free pass to dump dangerous toxic mining waste into our precious waterways. From decimated landscapes to polluted drinking water, the destructive impacts of mountaintop removal mining have jeopardized the environment and health of those living in its shadow for far too long. Rather than promoting the interests of coal mining companies, Congress should be promoting these important, sensible safeguards for the drinking water of our mining communities.”
