WASHINGTON, DC —League of Conservation Voters (LCV) President Gene Karpinski released this statement on President Obama’s expansion of the Pacific Remote Island Marine National Monument, creating the world’s largest network of protected oceans that are off limits to commercial activity:
“Today’s announcement is great news for an area that is already experiencing the devastating impacts of climate change. This new monument will help safeguard vulnerable coral reefs and countless species of birds, fish, and marine life. The United States is now a global leader on ocean protection, and we hope other nations will follow President Obama’s leadership and protect vulnerable ocean areas around the world.”
