Washington, DC – LCV President Gene Karpinski issued the following statement about President Obama’s visit to Alaska and his unprecedented trip to the Arctic:
“President Obama’s visit to the Alaskan Arctic is an unprecedented attempt to draw the world’s attention to climate change’s ground zero. It comes shortly after the release of his administration’s Clean Power Plan, which is the biggest step we have ever taken to combat climate change. Indeed, no president has done or said more about the threat of climate change than Barack Obama. That is why we remain deeply disappointed that Shell has been allowed to begin drilling in the Arctic Ocean this year. We hope the president’s visit to the unraveling Arctic will rally people and leaders around the world to commit to bold action to address this global challenge and protect the only planet we’ve got.”
