Washington D.C.—Today President Obama and Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau announced a series of important announcements to combat climate change. In response League of Conservation Voters (LCV) President Gene Karpinski said:
President Obama and Prime Minister Trudeau are demonstrating just the kind of joint leadership and cooperation we need to combat climate change and meet the emissions reductions targets agreed to in Paris. After many years in which Canada moved in the wrong direction on climate change, it’s especially exciting to see Prime Minister Trudeau swiftly correct course and set Canada back on track toward a clean energy future. We are particularly pleased with President Obama and Prime Minister Trudeau’s commitments to immediately begin the process to reduce methane pollution from existing sources in the oil and gas industry, provide additional protections for the Arctic, phase out fossil fuel subsidies and accelerate the shift to clean, renewable energy. We applaud President Obama and Prime Minister Trudeau for their commitments today, which will help ensure that North America continues to lead the world in addressing the climate crisis.
